Doorman Wanted is set in New York City…

5th Avenue, early morning

Doorman Wanted

“I turned the corner off Park Avenue and started looking for my home. There it is, I thought, that one there. On the tree-lined stretch of stately condos and apartment buildings, the structure that had technically been in my possession since 7:37 p.m. two weeks ago Tuesday—the determined hour and minute my father suffered his heart attack—announced itself like Dad invariably did when entering into any setting: loudly, with exuberance, and flashing money.”

“Doorman Wanted”

The idea for Doorman Wanted came to me while I was walking one day on New York’s Upper East Side. I saw the mundane act of a doorman greeting two people entering a building, and I couldn’t help but think — what secrets does he know about the people within? Better yet, what secrets might he have that would surprise those residents?

“‘Central Park—that’s our studio now, when we have materials. It’s got plenty of natural light, don’t it, Tom? Can’t complain about the light.’”

One of the many art galleries on the Upper East Side

“The most eye-catching and noteworthy feature of the gallery, however, is a full-sized, iron sculpture of a man standing out front. While neighborhood pigeons may be appreciative of the statue’s presence in the middle of the sidewalk, pedestrians aren’t. If this statue is intended to represent Mr. Stewart, then he might have done his neighbors a favor by having his iron likeness stand off to one side. I don’t know Mr. Stewart well, but it seems the artist has caught his general mien. Iron-willed. Strong jawed. Inarguably in the way.”
